Nestled in the heart of the Lowveld, Likweti Bushveld Farm Estate offers a stunning backdrop for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers alike. A group of avid birders recently gathered at the estate for a bird watching walk led by the renowned International bird guide, Marc Cronje. Despite the crisp winter chill, the group set out with high hopes, and they were not disappointed.
The adventure began at the estate’s gate, where the birders were greeted by a vibrant congregation of sunbirds feeding on the flowering trees. Witnessing these birds in their beautiful breeding plumages was a delightful start to the day. The group was also fortunate to spot African green pigeons, which are often elusive. A clear sighting of these shy birds was a special highlight.

As the walk progressed, a Lizard Buzzard made a striking appearance, offering fantastic photographic opportunities in the gentle morning light. Venturing off the beaten path led the group to new discoveries, starting with the melodious serenade of the Croaking Cisticola.
Likweti Bushveld Farm Estate boasts a diverse range of habitats, from wooded areas to expansive savannah-like plains. This ecological diversity ensures sightings of a variety of bird species, each adapted to its unique environment. The estate’s commitment to nature preservation enhances biodiversity, enriching every birding expedition with rare encounters. While the primary focus of the walk was on birdlife, the group also appreciated the chance to encounter the estate’s wildlife, such as giraffes and zebras. Excitement sparked when rumors circulated of a recent serval sighting by some of the residents—a testament to the estate’s successful wildlife management practices.
Other highlights included the striking Yellow-throated Longclaw, the vibrant African Firefinch, and the elegant Long-crested Eagle perched near the estate’s entrance. Notable sightings included an Emerald-spotted Wood Dove, Common Waxbill, Black-winged Kite, and a Hammerkop. Each sighting underscored Likweti’s status as a birdwatcher’s paradise.
