Chimp Eden – 40 km
Situated within the beautiful 1,000-hectare Umhloti Nature Reserve, 15 kilometres outside Nelspruit (Turn Off 47, R40, Barberton Road Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa), the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) South Africa Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to chimps that have been misplaced from their natural habitats in Africa.
Chimp Eden was established in 2006 and is the first and only chimpanzee sanctuary in South Africa. This JGI chimpanzee sanctuary brings the world of chimpanzees closer to humanity through education end eco-tourism.
The goal of the chimpanzee sanctuary is to rescue chimpanzees that have survived the bush meat trade, been orphaned, traded in the illegal pet market, or rescued from being traumatised for entertainment in circuses, beach resorts and night clubs.
The chimpanzees at Chimp Eden are the lucky ones, living out their lives in a risk-free environment and being provided with the necessary attention to recover from the trauma they have experienced. The chimpanzees spend their days in semi-wild enclosures and show normal social interaction and behavioural patterns as group members.
There are currently three different chimp groups and enclosures at the South African sanctuary. There are viewpoints overlooking the forest and “foraging areas’ from which visitors and volunteers can observe and study the chimpanzees.
Chimp Tour
Visitors have a unique opportunity to see chimpanzees in semi-wild enclosures. The chimps show normal social interaction and behavioral patterns despite their traumatic backgrounds as pets, entertainment animals and victims of the bushmeat trade. The enclosures also have viewpoints overlooking the forest and ‘foraging areas’ These areas provide the chimps with endless hours of fun, safe from human intervention and positively reinforce their natural behavior. Come and join us for a tour to meet humans closest relative, see their unique personalities and learn how we can all work together to save these animals from extinction!
The chimp tour guide talks about chimpanzees, the sanctuary, and introduces the individual chimps and their stories – from the safety of the viewing points. The tour takes approximately one hour. Cold Drinks will be available but, unfortunately, we will not be offering any hot drinks or light meals at this stage.

For elderly or disabled guests please use the upper car park as this provides wheelchair access via the fish spa.
Caves – The Amphitheatre
A stream of fresh, cool air from an unknown source permeates the spacious corridors, maintaining them at an even temperature of 17°C all year round.
The Sudwala cavern complex is dominated by this spectacular chamber, with a lofty corridor measuring 150 metres to its centre. The amphitheatre is 70 metres in diameter, and 37 metres high to the peak of a dome-like feature in its roof. It is named the PR Owen Hall, after the Mr Owen who bought the caves and developed them as an attraction which could be visited and appreciated by the public.
It has natural ‘air conditioning’ and makes a wonderful performing arts venue. The veteran concert singer Ivan Rebroff, who sang here in 1970, declared its acoustics equal or superior to any other.
Crystal tour
At the Sudwala caves you can embark on an epic underground adventure that takes you 2000m into the heart of the caves. The goal is the crystal chamber with its amazing array of sparkling aragonite crystals.
The crystal tour is a specialized tour for the adventurous, an organized excursion that involves wading through water, crystal-tour scrambling up and down rocks and crawling through small tunnels leaving you wet and dirty but awestruck by the splendour and beauty of the crystals that surround you in the chamber.
Fish Spa
Fish Spa pedicures provide a fun and unusual way for you to clean and exfoliate your skin.
Customers place their feet in warm freshwater tanks containing dozens of toothless Garra rufa fish, which are about the size of minnows. These little guys are known as doctor or nibble fish, and they provide an excellent service. The Dr fish exfoliation is believed to stimulate blood flow and improve circulation, remove bacteria, reduce foot odour, and help with athlete’s foot.
The Butterfly effect
The Sudwala Butterfly Effect Nature Garden has been developed as part of a long-term conservation project to provide host plants and flowers specifically aimed at increasing our local butterfly, bee and antelope populations.
Butterfly and bee numbers have declined dramatically in recent years due to an increase in agricultural activity, pesticides, and habitat loss. This project aims to educate and bring people and nature together.
The Butterfly Dome
This is a butterfly conservation project to help increase butterfly numbers in nature. We do not buy butterflies in or release nonlocal butterflies. When there are butterflies, we collect the eggs and caterpillars of the available species and place them in the dome on their specific host plant.
Adult butterflies are allowed to mate and lay their eggs on their host plants and then they are released. They will continue to mate and lay eggs in the wild for the next few weeks of their lives. In Nature from 500 eggs laid, only 2 adults usually survive.
In the dome we protect the fragile eggs and larvae then we release the adults, thereby increasing the local adult butterfly population.
Sudwala Dinosaur Park
The Dinosaur Park is situated next to the Sudwala Caves, 30 minutes’ drive from Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa.
The museum displays life size models of pre-historic animals, ranging from amphibious reptiles, ancient reptiles, dinosaurs, pre-historic mammals, pre-historic man and more. The models were artistically and realistically sculpted by Jan van Zijl (also responsible for the black wildebeest on the old South African 2c coin).
Also on display are live Nile Crocodiles, perfectly adapted to survival and not much changed from their ancient relatives.
The Park is set in a lush sub-tropical forest garden, where monkeys and red-breasted cuckoos abound. New is a magnificent ‘viewing deck’ from where the Rainforest Valley (National Heritage Site # 167) can be observed – with occasional glimpses of wild chacma baboons.

Mpumalanga UNESCO World Heritage
Graskop Gorge Lift Company & Bungee – 86 km
Situated just outside of Graskop on the R533 towards Hazyview (on the opposite side of the gorge to the Big Swing).
The lift
The viewing lift takes visitors 51m down the face of the gorge into the indigenous forest below, where wooden walkways & suspension bridges make up a 600m trail.
Interactive exhibits and interpretation boards enable visitors to explore the diverse life that thrives under the dense canopy of trees. Enjoy the waterfall and meandering stream.
The forest
Whilst the lift, which travels 51m down the cliff face of the Graskop Gorge, was a feat of engineering skill to construct, it is the Afromontane Forest below that is at the heart of this development.
In South Africa, Afromontane forests cover only 0.5% of the country’s land area. They occur in pockets along mountain ranges in well-watered areas, including ravines and south-facing slopes. Under the vivid green canopy of trees lies a lush wonderland filled with a spectacular variety of plants, animals, insects, and birds.
Zipline
Visitors to the centre who still want to get their hearts racing but who think the Big Swing is too extreme for them, can choose to fly across the gorge on a high-wire Zipline.
The course starts from the top of a 5m tower, with 360° views. Participants ride a 120m-long zipline to the northern side of the gorge before walking a short distance along a scenic platform and zipping back along a second zipline of equal length.
Big Swing
The Big Swing is one of the world’s highest cable gorge swings and launches off the top of a waterfall.
The experience is very different to a bungee-jump because participants freefall for 70m before the jump rope pulls them into a high-speed arch and they swing from one side of the gorge to the other. When falling, they reach 140km/h in three seconds
