A Scaly-throated Honeyguide was recently spotted as a new bird for the Likweti bird list in September, 2015. Local bird expert, Peter Lawson shares his sighting experience with us.
Likweti Estate is always full of surprises and I would not expect anything new at this stage of the game, but I did get a new bird. Scaly-throated Honeyguide was calling constantly with a fast trill, like a finger run down a hair comb. This is normally a forest bird from higher altitude and thus surprising on Likweti Estate. Normally they have a regular call-site from the same tree to attract females as they are brood parasites when breeding and are hosted (reluctantly) by hole-nesting birds such as woodpeckers and barbets. This sighting brings the total list of species spotted at Likweti Estate to 209.
